Obituary

Veronica C. "Verna" Sojkowsky, 99, of Dunmore, passed away on Tuesday at The Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania, after a brief illness.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, John L. Sojkowsky, who passed away on November 23,1991.  The couple was married on January 11, 1947.  Verna was born in Throop on August 14, 1923, and was the last surviving child of the Late John and Mary Vesely Zilla.  She was a 1941 graduate of Throop High School.  She and her husband moved to New Jersey in 1952, settling in Budd Lake.  They remained there for 25 years, before retiring and moving to Dunmore in 1977.

Verna worked at McGregor Sportswear and retired from US Army Research and Development Command at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, New Jersey. She was a member of the former St. John the Baptist Church, now Blessed Sacrament Parish in Throop.  She was a devoted wife and meticulous homemaker.  Verna was well read, determined, independent, and strong willed; all attributes that helped her remain in her home until her 99th birthday.  She enjoyed keeping up with current events and reading the newspaper.  Her famous question was "What's new in Throop?"

Verna is survived by 2 sisters-in-law, Florence Sajkowski, Dunmore, and Barbara Zilla, Throop, along with numerous nieces and nephews,great-nieces and nephews and great,great-nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 4 brothers: Joseph E. Zilla who was killed in action during World War II, Edward J. Zilla, John S."Ozzie" Zilla, and Paul S. Zilla.  She was preceded by 2 nephews, Richard and Bernie Zilla.

Special thanks to two exceptional nurses, Terona, and Vern's great niece Janel, for going above and beyond, as well as the entire staff of the Jewish Home and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the tender loving care she received during her illness.

The family respectfully requests that masks are worn for visitation and funeral mass.
