Obituary

Robert "Bob" Fitzsimmons, the man, the myth, the legend, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2025, at the age of 67. Surrounded by his loving family, he found solace in his final moments after a long fought illness.

Born on September 23, 1957, on a crisp Monday, Bob was the second child of Anthony and Margaretta McCormick Fitzsimmons. He graduated from North Pocono High School in 1976 and later married his soulmate Patricia Kochis Fitzsimmons, in 1977. Their love story spanned an incredible 48 years, celebrating their 47th wedding anniversary on August 12, 2024. Together, they were blessed with three remarkable children, Jodie, Kristin and Bobby.

Bob dedicated his professional life to healthcare, working at Mercy Hospital for 38 years before transitioning to St. Eulalia's Church until his retirement. However, Bob was and active and engaged individual, and he couldn't resist the urge to stay involved. After retirement, he embarked on a part-time job at Glenmaura Golf Course, where he felt true happiness in a job.

But perhaps Bob's most well-known identity was Coach Bob. His coaching journey began when his children started playing T-ball, and it was during this time that his legendary reputation truly took flight.

He dedicated four decades of his life coaching, mentoring countless children, adolescents, and adults in various schools and colleges. While softball was his passion, he also excelled in coaching basketball, golf, and volleyball. The sheer number of schools and individuals he touched during this remarkable journey is almost impossible to quantify.

One coaching position at Marywood Softball stands out as a testament to his exceptional achievements. He received Coach of the Year honors several times and became the school's all-time winningest coach, earning induction into the Marywood Hall of Fame in March 2024. This distinction was well-deserved for a man who poured his heart into teaching not only the fundamentals of the game but also instilling valuable leadership skills, loyalty, devotion, discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. Many regarded him as a second father or grandfather, always ready to offer a pep talk, a comforting hug, or a gentle nudge to motivate and inspire them. His warm personality and the sense of security he provided had a profound impact on the entire community.

Beyond his coaching prowess, Bob also served as a PIAA official for four decades, officiating football, basketball, and volleyball games. His commitment extended beyond just calling penalties; he actively encouraged players and provided strategic insights to enhance their performance.

Bob's passion for sports was evident in both coaching and his unwavering support for his favorite teams. He was a diehard Notre Dame fan, a loyal Boston Celtics and Phillies supporter, he even proudly embraced the New York Jets (though he faced some teasing for that choice). Despite being confined to his hospital bed, he rejoiced as he and Kristin watched Notre Dame defeat Penn State in the most recent chapter of their storied rivalry. The memory for Kristin will be forever-cherished. Well done, Notre Dame, on that triumphant win!

In his spare time, Bob loved nothing more than to be on the golf course with family or friends. He also fancied himself a bit of a handyman, never hesitating to help others when needed.

Bob is survived by his three children: Jodie Fitzsimmons, Jefferson Township; Kristin (Efren) Perez, Jefferson Township; and Robert (Sophie) Fitzsimmons, Langhorne.

As a grandfather, his goal was to have 12 grandchildren. Although the group fell a bit short and only managed 7.5, he adored Corey, Kaila, Brandon, Cara, Molly, Lilly, Huey, and soon-to-be born Valerie. His love for them was boundless, and his presence will undoubtedly be missed.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Margaretta, his father, Anthony, and his sister Patricia.

The family expresses its deepest gratitude to Allied Hospice for providing a beautiful and peaceful journey for Bob and the entire family. The staff's compassion, care, and unwavering support are truly unparalleled.

It is humbling to acknowledge the overwhelming support the community has shown during the past months. The memories, pictures, kind words, cards, and donations all serve as a testament to Bob's larger-than-life presence in many people's lives.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. on February 22 at St. Eulalia's Parish in Moscow. Calling hours will commence at 9 a.m.at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Allied Hospice, 511 Morgan Highway, Scranton, PA 18508.
