John M. Washenko, 70, of Throop passed away Saturday, September 26, 2026. Born to William Washenko and Florence Koritkoski, “Big Jack” kept the boulevard on its toes.
Being born with cerebral palsy earned Jack a lengthy stay at Shriners Children’s Hospital. While it was a challenging experience, he could always find something to bring out that hearty laugh of his when retelling stories about those early days. Maybe it was this stay in combination with his mom that toughened him up as he never let his “Crazy Legs” get in the way of doing what he wanted to do. As a member of the Schrader Creek Hunting Lodge of the Mid Valley, he rode piggyback on his brother Bill as they climbed the mountain to hunt. He served as a volunteer firefighter and worked the pump. He found modes of transport via crutches, ATVs, and a 6-wheeler, which for some of the time, left him banged up but nothing could hold him down for long. Where Jack’s will was, there was no one that could stand in his way.
Professionally, after specialized training, Jack secured a job at the Lackawanna County Controller’s Office and made a home in the payroll department as “Washy” until retirement. Sharp as a tack and quick with a comeback, he was the family go to for one liners, belting out the classics, and a knowledgebase for all things county related. He also assisted the family as the token dog babysitter. One might like to say that he got a little kick out of always going against the grain of the rest of the family members, especially as he faithfully supported the Dallas Cowboys.
In his later years, Jack found a roommate in the form of a caretaker - his Godson Jason Wildman. They shared plenty of good times, lots of laughs, cabin trips, and memorable stories over the last decade. In addition, Jason’s dog Scout became one of Jack’s best buds and kept him in great company.
Jack leaves behind a brother, William Washenko; niece and Goddaughter Heather Washenko; nephew Billy Washenko (Lisa); roommate, caretaker, and Godson Jason Wildman; great nieces Mia and Sofia Washenko and great nephew Bodhi William Washenko White. In addition, Jack is survived by a great number of cousins, uncle John Koritkoski, and good friend George Uhrin, who would find ways to lift his spirits.
Aside from his parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, he was preceded in death by his sister-in-law Deborah L. Washenko as well as his girl Minnie.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to United Cerebral Palsy or Shriners Children’s Hospital in his memory. We will always remember Jack for his ability to live life the way he wanted to; he did it his way and on his terms. He had legs supported by aluminum and a heart full of gold.
A Blessing service will be held Thursday October 15,2026 at 11:00 A.M at St. Anthony's Cemetery Chapel, Dickson city,PA.
