John S. Skutnik Sr.

John S. Skutnik, Sr., 92, of Throop, died on Thursday, August 27, 2026, while under the care of Hospice of the Sacred Heart. He was the loving husband of Arlene (Bowen) Skutnik, who passed away on June 20, 2018. They had been married more than sixty years.

Born on July 8, 1934 in Throop, he was the son of Stephen and Anella (Kwolek) Skutnik. John graduated from Throop High School in 1951. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 until 1957. He was a sixty-year member of Throop Hose Company #1. John was a retired meat cutter, having worked at several area meat-packing companies through the years. He later worked at Specialty Records and the Mid Valley School District.

He is survived by his loving children, John S. Skutnik, Jr. and Judith Yokaitis-Skutnik (deceased), Cleveland Hts., OH; David and Kari Skutnik, Pen Argyl, PA; Michelle and Steve Lozowski, West Chester, PA; Stephen Skutnik, Dickson City, PA; grandchildren Stephanie, Timothy, Emily and Christopher, great-grandchildren Stephen, Lacey, Brooke, Hadley and Boden as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his brother, Chester Skutnik, and sisters Janet Strugala, Irene Mackarevich and Theresa Kalinoski.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 5, 2026 beginning at 9 AM at St. Carlo Acutis Parish at St. Anthony’s Church, 215 Rebecca St. in Throop. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 AM. Interment will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery, Dickson City.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 100 William St., Scranton, PA 18510.
